Tandoori Chicken in the Air Fryer
Air fryer tandoori chicken gives you the deep red color, charred edges and tender meat of a clay oven using only a basket and a good marinade. Yogurt, lemon and warm spices tenderize bone-in thighs, and the hot air browns the surface in about 25 minutes. The method below includes timings for breasts, drumsticks and boneless thighs.

Why the air fryer works for tandoori chicken
A tandoor is a clay oven that reaches temperatures far above 600 °F. The chicken cooks in a few minutes, the marinade chars at the edges and the inside stays juicy. A home oven cannot reach those temperatures, but an air fryer comes closer, because the fast hot air browns the surface of the marinade in minutes while the meat cooks through.
The marinade does most of the work. Yogurt and lemon juice soften the protein, which is why the cuts are scored and the chicken should marinate for at least 2 hours. The spices, mostly garam masala, cumin, paprika and turmeric, give the flavor and the red-orange color. Removing the skin lets the marinade cling directly to the meat and keeps the surface from becoming greasy and soft. Thighs are the best cut because they stay tender even if the char takes an extra minute.

- Score the chicken Remove the skin and pat the thighs dry. Cut 2 or 3 deep slashes across each thigh, down to the bone. The cuts let the marinade soak in and help the meat cook evenly.
- Mix the marinade In a large bowl, stir together the yogurt, lemon juice, oil, ginger, garlic, garam masala, cumin, paprika, turmeric, cayenne and salt until smooth.
- Marinate Add the chicken and rub the marinade into the cuts. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or up to 12 hours. Overnight gives the strongest flavor and the most tender meat.
- Cook Preheat the air fryer to 380 °F for . Lift the thighs out and scrape off the thick excess marinade. Place them in a single layer, meaty side up, and cook for , flipping after . Cook in 2 batches in a 4 qt basket.
- Char the edges Raise the heat to 400 °F and cook for 3 more minutes, until the surface has dark spots like a tandoor. Watch closely, because the sugars in yogurt darken fast.
- Check the temperature Insert an instant-read thermometer into the thickest part without touching the bone. It must read at least 165 °F, and 175 °F gives an even more tender thigh. Rest for and serve.

Times are a guide and depend on the size and wattage of your air fryer. Done at 165 °F (74 °C) in the center. See also air fryer cooking times for all foods.
Tips
- Marinate long. Two hours is the minimum. Overnight is better, and the meat is noticeably more tender.
- Scrape before cooking. A thin layer of marinade chars, while a thick one stays wet and burns.
- Use the high heat at the end. A few minutes at 400 °F produce the dark spots, without drying out the meat.
What to serve with tandoori chicken
Warm naan or basmati rice, a cooling cucumber raita and sliced red onion with lemon are the classic partners. A simple salad of tomato and cucumber balances the spice. For vegetables, cauliflower roasted with the leftover spices or green beans work well. See air fryer cooking times for side dishes that cook in the same machine.
Other cuts to try
If you prefer lean meat, our chicken breast guide covers the timing, and the same marinade works for it. Chicken skewers are a good way to cook cubed tandoori chicken for a party. For a plain version of the thighs without the spices, see chicken thighs.
Storing and reheating
Cooked chicken keeps for 3 to 4 days in a sealed container in the refrigerator. Reheat in the air fryer at 350 °F for 5–7 minutes, until the center reaches 165 °F. You can also freeze the raw chicken in its marinade for up to 3 months and thaw it overnight in the refrigerator.
Variations
- Mild: Replace the cayenne with an extra ½ tsp of paprika for a mild version for children.
- Dairy-free: Replace the yogurt with unsweetened coconut yogurt. The result is slightly less tangy, but still tender.
- Chicken tikka style: Cut boneless thighs into 1½-inch cubes, marinate them the same way and cook for 10–12 minutes.
If it does not turn out right
- The marinade burned and tastes bitter
- Too much yogurt was left on the chicken. Scrape the surface lightly before cooking and keep the heat at 380 °F until the final few minutes.
- The chicken is dry
- Breast meat overcooks quickly. Use bone-in thighs, or take breasts out at 165 °F after 14–16 minutes.
- The color is pale, not red
- Use fresh paprika, which gives the red color, and marinate for at least 2 hours. A little more paprika deepens the color without adding heat.
Questions and answers
How long does tandoori chicken take in the air fryer?
About 25 minutes at 380 °F for bone-in, skinless thighs, with a 3 minute char at 400 °F at the end. Boneless pieces take 16–18 minutes.
What temperature is best for tandoori chicken?
380 °F cooks the meat through without burning the marinade, and a short blast at 400 °F adds the char. The center must reach 165 °F.
Can I make tandoori chicken with breasts or drumsticks?
Yes. Breasts cut into 1½-inch pieces take 14–16 minutes. Drumsticks take 24–26 minutes. Always check the temperature near the bone.
Is air fryer tandoori chicken the same as oven tandoori?
The air fryer gets closer to a real tandoor than a regular oven, because the hot air chars the surface quickly and the cooking time is much shorter.
