Air Fryer Chicken Skewers
Chicken kabobs usually need a grill, charcoal and good weather. Air fryer chicken skewers brown on all sides in 12 minutes at 400 °F, and a yogurt marinade keeps the lean breast meat tender. You get char-like edges, even cooking and no flare-ups, in any season. Here is how to pick the skewers, fit them in the basket and know when they are done.

Why the air fryer works for chicken skewers
A skewer exposes a lot of the meat's surface, which is the reason kabobs taste so good on the grill. The air fryer reproduces the same effect: hot air flows around the cubes, browns the outside and cooks the inside fast. The yogurt marinade helps too. Its mild acid and calcium soften the surface of the meat, and the thin coating browns in spots that look and taste like char.
Skewers also solve a problem with loose chicken cubes. They are easy to turn, and the pieces stay in place instead of rolling around the basket. For pieces without skewers see chicken bites, and for a whole cut with bones see chicken thighs.
How to make chicken skewers in the air fryer
Tap a time to start a timer.
- Make the marinade In a large bowl, whisk the yogurt, oil, lemon juice, garlic, salt, pepper, oregano and paprika. Add the chicken and toss to coat. Cover and refrigerate for at least , or up to 8 hours.
- Prepare the skewers If you use wooden skewers, soak them in water for so the ends do not scorch. Check that the skewers lie flat in your basket; 6-inch skewers fit most 5 qt models.
- Thread the chicken Slide 2 or 3 cubes onto each skewer, leaving a small gap between the pieces so the heat reaches every side. Wipe off thick lumps of marinade.
- Preheat Preheat the air fryer to 400 °F for .
- Cook Place the skewers in a single layer in the basket. Most 4–6 qt baskets hold 4 or 5 skewers side by side, so cook in two batches. Cook each batch for , turning the skewers over after .
- Check and rest The chicken should have browned edges, and an instant-read thermometer in the center of a cube should read 165 °F. Let the skewers rest for before serving.

Tips
- Cut the cubes evenly. Pieces of about 1¼ inches cook through in 12 minutes while the outside browns.
- Leave small gaps. Tightly packed cubes steam, and the touching sides stay pale.
- Marinate in the refrigerator. Time in the yogurt mix makes the chicken juicier. Longer than 8 hours can make the texture mushy.
What to serve with chicken skewers
Chicken skewers go well with rice pilaf, warm pita and a cucumber salad, or with tzatziki or garlic sauce. For an American-style cookout plate, serve them with corn on the cob and coleslaw. Zucchini cooks quickly too, so add it to the basket for the last 6 minutes of the cooking time.
Storing and reheating
Refrigerate the cooked skewers in a sealed container for up to 3 days. Reheat them in the air fryer at 350 °F for 4–5 minutes until they reach 165 °F in the center. Raw marinated chicken can be frozen on the skewers for up to 3 months; thaw in the refrigerator overnight before cooking.
Variations
- Garlic Parmesan: Replace the oregano and paprika with 2 tbsp grated Parmesan and 1 tsp Italian seasoning (the yogurt makes the coating stick).
- Teriyaki: Marinate the chicken in ¼ cup teriyaki sauce and 1 tbsp oil instead of the yogurt mix (not gluten-free).
- Veggie kabobs: Alternate the chicken with 1-inch pieces of bell pepper and red onion.
- Satay style: Marinate in 2 tbsp peanut butter, 1 tbsp soy sauce, lime juice and ginger, and cook for 10–12 minutes (not gluten-free).
- Chicken Tikka: For a dedicated recipe, see air fryer chicken tikka.
If it does not turn out right
- The wooden skewers burn
- Soak them for 20 minutes before threading, or use metal skewers that fit the basket. Make sure the ends do not touch the heating element.
- The chicken is dry
- The cubes were too small or cooked too long. Keep them at about 1¼ inches, marinate for at least 30 minutes and pull them at 165 °F.
- The marinade burns
- Wipe off excess marinade before cooking. A thin yogurt coat browns; a thick one scorches at 400 °F.
Questions and answers
How long do you cook chicken skewers in the air fryer?
12 minutes at 400 °F for chicken breast cubes of about 1¼ inches, turned halfway. Thigh meat takes 12–14 minutes.
Can you cook chicken kabobs with vegetables in the air fryer?
Yes. Vegetables like bell pepper and red onion in 1-inch chunks cook in the same time as the chicken. Put them on separate skewers if you want to take them out earlier.
Can you cook frozen chicken skewers in the air fryer?
Yes, for store-bought ready skewers. Cook them at 370 °F for 14–16 minutes, turning halfway, until the chicken reaches 165 °F.
Should you use metal or wooden skewers?
Both work. Metal ones are reusable and do not burn, but get hot. Wooden skewers should be soaked first and trimmed to fit the basket.
