Orange Chicken in the Air Fryer
Air fryer orange chicken has the crunch and sticky citrus glaze of takeout with much less oil than deep frying. The chicken is coated in a light breading, air fried until crisp at 400 °F, then tossed in a quick orange sauce just before serving. Here is how to keep it crunchy, plus times for frozen and no-breading versions.

Why the air fryer works for orange chicken
Takeout orange chicken is deep fried in a thick batter and covered in sweet sauce. That recipe does not translate to the air fryer, because wet batter drips through the basket and never sets. A dry breading does work. A coating of cornstarch, flour and panko dries out quickly in the circulating air and becomes crisp, with a fraction of the oil.
The second half of the dish is the sauce. Orange juice and zest give the flavor, soy and vinegar balance the sugar, and a small amount of cornstarch makes it glossy. Keep the sauce separate from the chicken until the last moment. Breading that sits in sauce turns soft within minutes, and the whole point of using the air fryer is to keep that crunch.

- Set up the breading Whisk the ⅓ cup cornstarch, the flour, ½ tsp of the salt and the pepper in a shallow dish. Put the eggs in a second dish and the panko in a third. Pat the chicken dry.
- Bread the chicken Dip each piece in the flour mixture, then the egg, then press it into the panko. Place the pieces on a plate. Use one hand for the dry steps and one for the egg to keep your fingers clean.
- Air fry Preheat the air fryer to 400 °F for . Brush the basket lightly with oil and spray the chicken generously with cooking spray. Cook in a single layer for , shaking after ; most baskets need 2 batches for this amount. The pieces should be deep golden and the center must reach 165 °F.
- Make the sauce While the chicken cooks, combine the orange juice, zest, brown sugar, soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, ginger and pepper flakes in a small saucepan. Simmer for . Stir the 2 tsp cornstarch with the water, add it and simmer more until glossy.
- Toss and serve Put the hot chicken in a large bowl, pour the sauce over it and toss for 10 seconds. Serve immediately with the scallions on top, so the breading does not soften.

Tips
- Use thighs. Their fat keeps the pieces juicy under a crisp coating. Breast works, but check early.
- Spray everything. Dry breading needs a light coat of oil to turn golden, so spray the pieces on all sides before cooking.
- Sauce last. Toss at the table, or just before, and serve at once.
Which cut and how to cut it
One-inch pieces cook through in 12 minutes, while the breading browns. Larger pieces take longer and risk burning. If you prefer a no-sauce version, chicken bites use the same size pieces, and for a cutlet-style version of crispy chicken, see chicken cutlets. What to serve with orange chicken
Steamed white rice is the classic partner and absorbs extra sauce. Add broccoli, which cooks in the air fryer in about 8 minutes, or stir-fried green beans for color. Fried rice, a cucumber salad or egg rolls round out a takeout-style night at home.
Storing and reheating
Store the chicken and the sauce separately in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat the chicken in the air fryer at 350 °F for 3–5 minutes until it reaches 165 °F, warm the sauce on the stove and toss again. Leftover chicken that was already sauced will lose some crunch but still reheats well.
Variations
- Spicy: Increase the pepper flakes to ½ tsp or add 1 tsp of chili garlic sauce to the sauce.
- Marmalade shortcut: Replace the brown sugar and half the orange juice with 3 tbsp of orange marmalade.
- Extra citrus: Add 1 tbsp of fresh lemon juice for a brighter, less sweet sauce.
If it does not turn out right
- The chicken is not crunchy
- The breading was wet or the sauce sat too long. Press the panko on firmly, spray well, and toss with the sauce only right before serving.
- The breading falls off
- The chicken was wet when it went into the flour. Pat dry, and press the panko on with your palm. Do not use a loose, wet batter, which does not work in an air fryer.
- The sauce is too thin or too sweet
- Simmer it 1 minute longer to thicken. If it tastes too sweet, add 1 tsp more rice vinegar or a squeeze of lemon.
