Reheat Fries in the Air Fryer
Cold fries from the refrigerator are soft and greasy, and the microwave only makes them worse. To reheat fries in the air fryer, you need 375 °F and about 3–5 minutes, and they come out hot with a crisp outside again. Here is the right time for thin, thick and fast-food style fries, plus what to do if they are very soggy.

Why the air fryer works for reheating fries
A french fry is crisp for only a short time. As it cools, the steam trapped inside the potato moves out toward the surface and softens the crust. Microwaves add more steam, and the fries turn limp and rubbery. To get the crunch back, the surface has to lose that moisture quickly, and that is exactly what a fast stream of hot air does.
In the air fryer the fries heat from all sides while the dry air carries off moisture, and the small amount of oil already in the fries is enough to re-crisp the outside. That is why reheating fries in the air fryer works better than the oven or a skillet, with no extra oil and no long wait. It is also fast enough that you can reheat a handful of fries in the time it takes to warm up the rest of dinner.
How to reheat fries in the air fryer
Tap a time to start a timer.

Tips
- Start with a preheated basket. Cold fries in a cold basket slowly warm and steam. A hot basket sears the surface at once.
- Keep it to one layer. Eight ounces is plenty for a 5–6 qt air fryer. For more, reheat in batches and keep the first batch on a wire rack, not in a covered dish.
- Salt at the end. The surface oil is gone after reheating, so salt sticks best right after the basket comes out.
Reheating other fried sides together
Fries are often reheated together with another leftover, such as chicken tenders, nuggets or onion rings. They share the same temperature, so put the denser item in first for 2 minutes, then add the fries on top for the rest of the time. Fries that came with a burger or sandwich should be separated from the bun, which would soften in the heat. If you have leftover onion rings or chicken tenders, 375 °F for 4–5 minutes brings them back as well, and leftover chicken should reach 165 °F in the center.
What to serve with reheated fries
Serve them with ketchup, ranch, honey mustard or a cheese dip, or use them as the side for hamburgers and a quick coleslaw. For a snack plate, they also go well next to a handful of mini potatoes or crisp pickles.
Storing and reheating
Cool the fries completely, then keep them in a loosely covered container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Do not seal them tight while hot, because trapped steam makes them soggy overnight. Lining the container with a paper towel helps. Reheat only what you will eat, since fries do not crisp up well a second time. If the fries were served with a meat topping, heat the leftovers to 165 °F in the center.
If you are cooking fries from the freezer rather than reheating them, see the guide to frozen foods in the air fryer.
Variations
- Seasoned: Toss the hot fries with garlic powder, smoked paprika or grated Parmesan after reheating.
- Cheese fries: Add a handful of shredded cheddar for the last minute, until just melted.
- Sweet potato: Leftover sweet potato fries reheat at 350 °F for 3–4 minutes, since the sugar browns quickly.
If it does not turn out right
- The fries are hard and dry
- They cooked too long or the temperature was too high for thin fries. Reheat shoestring fries at 350 °F for 2–3 minutes, and check early.
- The fries are still limp in the middle
- The basket was crowded. Reheat in two small batches and shake halfway so the hot air reaches every side.
- The fries taste stale
- Fries kept for more than 3 days lose flavor. A little oil and a pinch of salt after reheating help, but fresh leftovers always work better.
Questions and answers
How long do you reheat fries in the air fryer?
3–5 minutes at 375 °F. Thin or fast-food style fries are ready in 3 minutes, while thick steak fries and wedges need 5–6 minutes.
What temperature should I use to reheat french fries in the air fryer?
375 °F works for most fries. Use 350 °F for very thin fries and up to 400 °F for thick, sturdy wedges, and check often.
Can I reheat fries straight from the fridge?
Yes. Cold fries from the refrigerator do not need to come to room temperature, and they crisp better when they go in cold. Preheat the basket first.
Should I add oil when reheating fries?
Not usually. Fries already contain oil from frying. Add only ½ tsp for very dry, oven-baked fries, or none at all.
