Onion Rings in the Air Fryer

Air fryer onion rings use a flour, egg and panko coating, which sticks and crisps in hot air, unlike a wet batter that would drip through the basket. Each batch takes 10 minutes at 400 °F, and the rings come out golden with a sweet, soft onion inside. This recipe also covers frozen onion rings and an egg-free version.

Why the air fryer works for onion rings

An onion ring is a soft, sweet ring of onion in a crisp shell. Deep frying sets the shell instantly in hot oil. The air fryer cannot do that with a wet batter, which would slide off and drip through the basket. A dry breading works better. Flour sticks to the onion, egg glues the panko to the flour, and the panko crisps up when hot air hits the oil spray on its surface.

Panko, which is made from larger, flakier crumbs, gives more crunch than regular breadcrumbs. Large sweet onions such as Vidalia hold their shape and cook until tender in 10 minutes without turning bitter.

How to make onion rings in the air fryer

Tap a time to start a timer.

  1. Cut the rings Peel the onions and slice them ½ inch thick. Separate the slices into rings and set the small center rings aside for another use. Use the 5–6 largest rings from each onion.
  2. Set up three bowls In the first, whisk the flour with ½ tsp salt and ½ tsp paprika. In the second, beat the eggs with the milk. In the third, mix the panko with the garlic powder and the remaining salt and paprika.
  3. Bread the rings Dip each ring in the flour and shake off the extra. Dip it in the egg, letting the extra drip off, then press it into the panko until fully coated. Place the rings on a plate.
  4. Preheat and spray Preheat the air fryer to 400 °F for . Spray the rings on both sides with cooking spray until the panko looks wet. Dry panko stays pale.
  5. Cook Place half the rings in the basket in a single layer, without overlap. Cook for , flipping after , until deep golden. Repeat with the second batch.
  6. Serve Move the rings to a plate and serve right away with ranch, ketchup or barbecue sauce.

Tips

  • Use a dry hand and a wet hand. Keep one hand for the dry flour and panko and the other for the egg. It avoids clumps on your fingers and thicker, patchy breading.
  • Cook in batches. Overlapping rings steam and lose their coating. Two rounds of 10 minutes still beat the oven.
  • Spray generously. The oil spray is what browns the panko in the air fryer, so coat every visible dry spot.

What to serve with onion rings

Onion rings are made for hamburgers and chicken nuggets, and they work as a snack on game day with ranch, barbecue sauce or a spicy mayo. For a softer onion side, try roasted onion wedges at 375 °F for 12–15 minutes.

Storing and reheating

Onion rings are best fresh. Leftovers keep for 2 days in a sealed container in the refrigerator, though they lose their crunch. Reheat them in the air fryer at 375 °F for 3–4 minutes, in a single layer, until hot and crisp. You can also freeze breaded raw rings on a tray, then bag them and cook from frozen for 10–12 minutes at 400 °F.

Variations

  • Extra crunch: Dip the rings in the egg and panko twice for a thicker coating.
  • Parmesan: Mix 2 tbsp grated Parmesan into the panko.
  • Gluten-free: Use gluten-free flour and gluten-free panko. The method and times stay the same.

If it does not turn out right

The breading falls off
The onion was wet, or the rings were handled too much. Pat the rings dry, use the three-bowl order of flour, egg and panko, and press the panko on firmly.
The coating is pale in spots
The panko was not sprayed enough. Spray both sides until the crumbs look damp, and flip the rings halfway.
The rings are greasy or soft inside
Onions release water as they cook. Slice them no thinner than ½ inch, cook in one layer and let the rings cool on a rack for 2 minutes, not on paper.

Questions and answers

How long do onion rings take in the air fryer?

Homemade breaded rings take 10 minutes at 400 °F, flipped halfway. Frozen onion rings take 8–10 minutes at 400 °F.

Can you cook battered onion rings in an air fryer?

A wet batter, such as a beer batter, drips through the basket and does not set. Use a dry breading of flour, egg and panko, or cook frozen pre-breaded rings.

Can you make onion rings without egg?

Yes. Dip the floured rings in ½ cup buttermilk or plain yogurt instead, then in the panko. The rings come out slightly less crisp.

Can I cook frozen onion rings in the air fryer?

Yes. Cook them in a single layer at 400 °F for 8–10 minutes, flipping once. Do not thaw them first.
