Bacon-Wrapped Chicken in the Air Fryer

Bacon-wrapped chicken in the air fryer solves the usual problem with this dish, which is bacon that stays limp while the chicken inside overcooks. Hot circulating air renders the bacon fat and crisps the strips while the chicken stays moist. These air fryer bacon-wrapped chicken breasts take 22 minutes and need only five ingredients.

Why the air fryer works for bacon-wrapped chicken

Bacon and chicken cook at very different speeds. Bacon needs enough heat to melt its fat and crisp, while lean chicken breast turns dry if it stays hot too long. A skillet usually gets one right and the other wrong, and the oven takes longer and leaves the bottom of the bacon soft.

In the air fryer, hot air moves around the whole piece. The bacon fat renders and drips away through the basket, so the strips crisp on every side, and the fat bastes the chicken as it goes. The chicken inside is protected from direct heat by the bacon layer, which is why bacon-wrapped chicken in the air fryer stays juicy even though the surface is crisp. An even thickness is the one thing you must control, because it determines whether the center is safe when the bacon is done.

How to make bacon-wrapped chicken in the air fryer

Tap a time to start a timer.

  1. Prepare the chicken Pat the breasts dry. If one end is much thicker, place the breast between sheets of plastic wrap and pound it to an even ¾ inch so it cooks at the same speed from end to end.
  2. Season Rub the chicken with the oil. Mix the garlic powder, paprika, salt and pepper, and sprinkle it over all sides. Do not add much salt, because the bacon is already salty.
  3. Wrap with bacon Wrap each breast tightly with 2 slices of bacon, overlapping the slices slightly and tucking the ends underneath. If needed, secure the bacon with a toothpick. Sprinkle the brown sugar over the tops.
  4. Cook Preheat the air fryer to 375 °F for . Place the chicken seam side down in a single layer, with space between the pieces; cook 2 at a time in a 4 qt basket and all 4 in a 6 qt. Cook for , flipping after .
  5. Check the temperature Insert an instant-read thermometer through the side of the thickest breast into the center. It must read 165 °F. If the bacon is crisp but the chicken is not at 165 °F, cook more.
  6. Rest and serve Rest the chicken for on a plate. Remove the toothpicks before serving.

Tips

  • Pound to an even thickness. A breast that is thick at one end takes much longer there. A quick pass with a rolling pin or skillet gives even results.
  • Use regular-cut bacon. It crisps in the same time the chicken needs. If all you have is thick-cut, give it a head start for a few minutes on its own.
  • Season lightly. Bacon brings plenty of salt and smoke, so the chicken needs only a little extra seasoning.

Which cut works best

Boneless breasts are the classic choice, but the same method works for smaller pieces. If you want something for a party, our chicken bites cook quickly and can take a bacon wrap. For a plain version without bacon, see chicken breast, and for crisp bacon strips on their own, bacon in the air fryer.

What to serve with bacon-wrapped chicken

The rich, salty bacon goes well with something green and something starchy. Green beans or asparagus cook in the same machine in about 8 minutes, and a baked potato or mashed potatoes completes a classic weeknight dinner. A small spoonful of ranch or honey mustard works as a dip.

Storing and reheating

Cool the chicken and store it in a sealed container in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days. Reheat in the air fryer at 350 °F for 6–8 minutes until the center reaches 165 °F; the bacon crisps up again. Sliced leftovers are good in a salad or a sandwich.

Variations

  • Cream cheese stuffed: Slice a pocket into each breast and fill it with 1 oz of cream cheese and chopped chives before wrapping (not dairy-free). Add 3–4 minutes to the cook time.
  • Maple glaze: Brush the bacon with 1 tbsp maple syrup mixed with ½ tsp mustard for the last 3 minutes.
  • Jalapeño cheddar: Lay a few jalapeño slices and a strip of cheddar on the chicken before wrapping, which makes a spicy version for game day.

If it does not turn out right

The bacon is soft and pale
Regular-cut bacon crisps best. Thick-cut needs about 5 more minutes, and the pieces should not overlap in the basket. A final 2 minutes at 400 °F also helps.
The basket is smoking
Bacon fat dripping onto a hot bottom causes smoke. Pour off the grease between batches and wipe the drawer, and do not overfill the basket.
The chicken is dry
Large breasts are often too thick and overcook on the outside. Pound them to even thickness and use a thermometer, taking the chicken out at 165 °F.

Questions and answers

How long do bacon-wrapped chicken breasts take in the air fryer?

About 22 minutes at 375 °F for 6 oz breasts, flipped halfway. Large 10 oz breasts need 26–28 minutes. Always confirm 165 °F in the center.

Can I use chicken tenders or thighs?

Yes. Tenders wrapped in a half slice of bacon need 12–14 minutes at 375 °F, and boneless thighs wrapped in bacon need 20–22 minutes.

Do I need to cook the bacon first?

Not for regular-cut bacon wrapped around thin chicken. For thick-cut bacon, cook it for 3–4 minutes first so it is crisp when the chicken is done.

How do I keep the bacon from unwrapping?

Place the chicken seam side down, tuck the ends beneath it and use a toothpick if needed. The bacon shrinks as it cooks and holds itself in place.
