Tater Tots in the Air Fryer
Air fryer tater tots are crisp and golden outside and soft inside after only 12 minutes, straight from the freezer and with no oil. Bake them in the oven and you wait 30 minutes for a softer result. Here are the times at 400, 375 and 350 °F, how much fits in the basket and how to reheat and dress them up.

Why the air fryer works for tater tots
A tater tot is shredded potato that has been shaped, par-fried and frozen. All the work of cooking has been done at the factory, so the air fryer only has to thaw the tot, heat it through and crisp the outside. Because the hot air circulates all around the tot, the surface dries out and browns in a few minutes, while the inside stays soft and mashed-potato-like.
The oven can do this, but the tots sit on a pan and cook mostly from below and above, so you have to flip them and wait up to 30 minutes. The air fryer takes less than half that time, and the little bit of oil already in the tots is all they need to brown. That makes tater tots one of the easiest items to cook from the freezer.
How to cook tater tots in the air fryer
Tap a time to start a timer.
- Preheat Heat the air fryer to 400 °F for , so the tots start browning the moment they go in.
- Fill the basket Spread the frozen tots in a single layer straight from the bag. Do not thaw them, because thawed tots turn mushy. A 5–6 qt basket holds a 16 oz bag, but an uncrowded layer crisps best, so cook in two batches for a bigger bag.
- Cook and shake Cook for at 400 °F, shaking the basket after to turn the tots over and break up any that have stuck.
- Check The tots are ready when they are deep golden brown and crisp on the outside. Bite one to check that the middle is hot and fluffy. Add if they are pale.
- Season Move them to a bowl, toss with the salt while hot and serve immediately.

Tips
- Cook them frozen. The moment they thaw, tots turn soft. A hot basket drives off the ice quickly.
- Leave space. A layer one tot deep gives the crispest result. Piling tots on top of each other leaves pale spots.
- Shake once or twice. Tots are fragile, so a gentle shake halfway through is enough.
Cooking at different temperatures
Most bags of frozen tots suggest 425 °F in the oven. An air fryer moves the air faster, so 400 °F is the best starting point. At 375 °F the tots take 15–17 minutes and brown more gently, which helps if your air fryer runs hot. At 350 °F they need 18–20 minutes and finish softer. If you cook a small amount, say a handful as a snack, start checking at 8 minutes. The general approach for other freezer items is in frozen foods in the air fryer.
What to serve with tater tots
Tots are a natural partner for hamburgers, chicken nuggets and fish sticks. Serve them with ketchup, ranch, fry sauce or a cheese dip. For a weeknight dinner, add a green salad or steamed vegetables. They also make a quick game day snack alongside nachos.
Storing and reheating
Leftover tots keep in the refrigerator for 3 days in a loosely covered container. Reheat them in the air fryer at 375 °F for 3–4 minutes, shaking once, until hot and crisp. An open bag of frozen tots should be sealed tight and kept in the freezer, where it stays good for several months.
Variations
- Cheesy tots: Sprinkle ¼ cup shredded cheddar over the hot tots for the last minute of cooking, until melted.
- Loaded tots: Top with cooked bacon crumbles, sour cream and sliced scallions.
- Seasoned: Toss the hot tots with garlic powder, smoked paprika or ranch seasoning.
If it does not turn out right
- The tots are soggy
- The basket was too full or not preheated. Cook one layer deep and shake at the halfway point. Ice from the bag is also a culprit, so shake off frost before cooking.
- The tots break apart
- Thawed or over-shaken tots fall apart. Keep them frozen and shake gently once, using tongs if needed.
- The outside burns before the inside heats
- Lower the heat to 375 °F and add 2–3 minutes. Different brands and sizes vary.
Questions and answers
How long do you cook tater tots in the air fryer?
12–14 minutes at 400 °F from frozen, shaking halfway. At 375 °F plan on 15–17 minutes, and at 350 °F about 18–20 minutes.
Do you need to thaw tater tots before air frying?
No. They cook best straight from the freezer. Thawed tots absorb moisture and turn soft instead of crisp.
Do tater tots need oil in the air fryer?
No. They are pre-fried and already contain oil. A teaspoon of oil in the basket gives a slightly deeper color, but it is optional.
Can I make tater tots from scratch in the air fryer?
Yes. Shape grated, par-cooked potato with a little flour and salt into tots, freeze them for 1 hour, then cook at 400 °F for 12–14 minutes like store-bought tots.
