Frozen Chicken Wings in the Air Fryer

Frozen chicken wings in the air fryer turn crisp and juicy in about 25 minutes, with no thawing and no deep fryer. The trick is to start them frozen at 400 °F, season once the surface has thawed and check for 165 °F. This page covers raw and precooked wings, the baking powder method for extra crunch and a quick buffalo sauce.

Why the air fryer works for frozen chicken wings

Chicken wings are mostly skin, fat and connective tissue, and all three need strong, dry heat. Frozen wings carry extra water in the form of ice. In an oven that moisture steams the wings for the first 10 minutes, and the skin never gets truly crisp. In an air fryer, fast hot air removes the ice and the moisture on the surface within the first few minutes, so the skin can render and crisp while the meat cooks through.

The fat that melts out of the skin drips through the basket instead of pooling around the wings, which is the other reason wings from the air fryer taste closer to fried. Raw wings take longer than precooked ones, so check the package first. Whichever you have, the wings are done when the thermometer says 165 °F, not by color alone.

How to cook frozen chicken wings in the air fryer

Tap a time to start a timer.

  1. Preheat Heat the air fryer to 400 °F for . Take the wings out of the freezer only when the basket is hot.
  2. First cook Put the frozen wings in the basket in a single layer, touching as little as possible. Cook for at 400 °F. This thaws the surface and melts the ice, so the seasoning will stay on.
  3. Season Pull the basket and separate any wings that are stuck together. Pat the surface dry with a paper towel, then toss the wings in a bowl with the baking powder, salt, pepper and garlic powder until they are lightly coated.
  4. Finish cooking Return the wings to the basket and cook for more at 400 °F, flipping after , until the skin is deep golden and crisp.
  5. Check the temperature Insert an instant-read thermometer into the thickest part of a drumette, without touching the bone. It must read 165 °F. Many cooks prefer wings at 175 °F for more tender meat, which takes 2–3 more minutes.
  6. Sauce For buffalo wings, whisk the hot sauce and melted butter in a large bowl, toss the hot wings in it and serve right away.

Tips

  • Season in the middle. Spices and baking powder slide off frozen wings. After 8 minutes the surface is thawed and everything stays put.
  • Don't crowd the basket. About 1½ lb of wings is one layer in a 5–6 qt basket. For a party, cook in batches and hold the first batch on a rack in a 200 °F oven.
  • Check the thickest wing. Drumettes take longer than flats, so test the largest one near the bone.

Raw or precooked wings

Raw frozen wings are cooked from scratch, so they need the full 24–28 minutes and a thermometer check. Precooked wings, often sold coated in sauce or breading, only need to be heated through at 400 °F for 12–15 minutes, with a final check for 165 °F in the center. Breaded frozen wings crisp best at 380 °F for 14–16 minutes. For wings cooked from fresh, see the chicken wings in the air fryer recipe, and for the general method for freezer foods, read frozen foods in the air fryer.

What to serve with frozen chicken wings

Classic game day sides are celery and carrot sticks with ranch or blue cheese dressing, plus coleslaw, mac and cheese or potato wedges. For a bigger spread, add onion rings and a bowl of nachos. Wing sauces such as honey BBQ, garlic Parmesan or lemon pepper all work.

Storing and reheating

Refrigerate cooked wings in a sealed container for up to 3 days. Reheat them in the air fryer at 375 °F for 5–7 minutes until they reach 165 °F in the center, which also re-crisps the skin. Freeze leftover raw wings in the original bag, pressing out the air, and do not refreeze wings that thawed on the counter.

Variations

  • Garlic Parmesan: Toss the hot wings with 2 tbsp melted butter, 1 minced garlic clove and ¼ cup grated Parmesan.
  • Lemon pepper: Toss the cooked wings in butter, lemon zest and plenty of black pepper.
  • Honey BBQ: Brush the wings with ¼ cup barbecue sauce mixed with 1 tbsp honey in the last 2 minutes. Sugar burns, so no earlier.

If it does not turn out right

The skin is rubbery
The surface was wet or the basket was crowded. Pat the thawed surface dry after the first 8 minutes, add the baking powder and keep the wings in one layer.
The wings taste of baking powder
Use only 1 tsp for 1½ lb and make sure it is aluminum-free. A metallic taste means too much, or baking soda instead of baking powder.
The sauce makes the wings soggy
Sauce the wings only at the very end and serve at once. For wings that stay crisp, serve the sauce on the side for dipping.

Questions and answers

How long do you cook frozen chicken wings in the air fryer?

24–28 minutes at 400 °F for raw wings, flipping halfway. Precooked frozen wings need only 12–15 minutes at the same temperature.

Do I need to thaw frozen wings first?

No. Cook them from frozen. Thawing on the counter is unnecessary and slower, and thawed wings do not crisp as well.

How do I know if frozen wings are raw or precooked?

Check the bag. Raw wings say they must be cooked to 165 °F, while precooked wings say fully cooked or heat and serve. If you are unsure, treat them as raw.

What temperature should chicken wings reach?

The USDA safe minimum is 165 °F. Wings contain connective tissue, so many people cook them to 175–185 °F for tender meat and crisp skin.
