S'mores in the Air Fryer

Air fryer s'mores give you a toasted marshmallow and melted chocolate in about 3 minutes, with no campfire, no skewer and no sticky smoke. The hot air browns the marshmallow on top while the chocolate underneath goes soft. This is the version to make on a rainy evening or after a weeknight dinner, with a s'mores dip for a crowd.

Why the air fryer works for s'mores

A traditional s'more has two jobs: toast the marshmallow and soften the chocolate. Over a fire, one of those usually goes better than the other, because the marshmallow is in direct flame and the chocolate gets only the leftover heat. In an air fryer, the hot air heats everything at the same time. The marshmallow puffs and browns at the surface, the chocolate beneath it softens, and the graham cracker warms and crisps slightly.

The tradeoff is that marshmallows are mostly sugar and air, so they brown fast and can blow around if the fan is strong. Keep the batch small, watch from the first minute and use the lowest temperature that works. In most baskets, 350 °F for about 3 minutes gives a golden top without a burnt crust.

How to make s'mores in the air fryer

Tap a time to start a timer.

  1. Build the base Place 8 of the graham cracker squares on a cutting board and set one square of chocolate on each. Keep the chocolate flat so the marshmallow sits level.
  2. Add the marshmallows Top each chocolate square with one large marshmallow. Press down lightly so it stays put, because the moving air can nudge a loose marshmallow.
  3. Preheat Preheat the air fryer to 350 °F for . Make sure the basket is empty of loose parchment while it heats.
  4. Load the basket Move the crackers into the hot basket in a single layer with a little room between them. If your basket holds only 4, cook in two batches.
  5. Toast Cook for , checking at . The marshmallows should be puffed and golden brown. They turn dark very quickly, so take them out as soon as they color.
  6. Finish Use a spatula to lift each base onto a plate, top with one of the remaining graham crackers and press down gently. Let them sit for so the marshmallow sets just enough to hold together.

Tips

  • Use a flat base. A graham cracker square or a flat cookie gives the marshmallow a stable surface.
  • Choose large marshmallows. Large ones toast evenly and hold their shape. Mini marshmallows work for a dip but burn faster on crackers.
  • Do not leave the room. The difference between golden and black is about 30 seconds, so stay near the air fryer.

What to serve with s'mores

S'mores are a dessert on their own, but a cold glass of milk or a mug of hot chocolate turns them into an evening treat. For a dessert board, put them next to cookies and a few brownies and let everyone build their own. Fresh strawberries or sliced bananas add a fruity contrast, and a few extra dessert recipes round out a party table.

Storing and reheating

S'mores are best eaten right away, while the marshmallow is soft and the chocolate is melted. Leftover assembled s'mores keep in an airtight container for a day, but the cracker softens. To revive one, open it, place the base in the air fryer at 330 °F for 1 minute and close it again. Store extra graham crackers, chocolate and marshmallows separately so you can make a fresh batch in minutes.

Variations

  • Peanut butter cup s'mores: Use a mini peanut butter cup instead of the chocolate square.
  • S'mores pie: Press a graham cracker crust into a 6-inch pan, fill with chocolate chips and marshmallows and cook at 330 °F for 5 minutes.
  • Cookie dough s'mores: Press chocolate chip cookie dough into a 6-inch skillet, bake at 320 °F for 10 minutes, then add chocolate and marshmallows for 2 minutes.
  • Salted caramel: Drizzle a little caramel over the chocolate before adding the marshmallow and finish with a pinch of flaky salt.

If it does not turn out right

The marshmallows burn
The basket is too hot or they cooked too long. Check at 2 minutes, and lower the heat to 330 °F if your air fryer runs hot.
The marshmallows blow off the crackers
A powerful fan can shift them. Press them down gently into the chocolate, or place a second graham cracker on top first and toast the stack.
The chocolate is still firm
Use thin chocolate squares rather than thick bars, and cook 30 seconds longer at 330 °F so the marshmallow does not darken further.

Questions and answers

How long do s'mores take in the air fryer?

About 3 minutes at 350 °F for a large marshmallow on chocolate and a graham cracker. Mini marshmallows take 1–2 minutes, so check early.

What temperature do I use for air fryer s'mores?

350 °F works for most baskets. Use 330 °F if your air fryer runs hot, and watch closely because marshmallows go from golden to burnt in seconds.

Can I make s'mores dip in the air fryer?

Yes. Melt 1 cup of chocolate chips in a small oven-safe 6-inch skillet, top with a layer of mini marshmallows and cook at 350 °F for 4–5 minutes. Serve with graham crackers.

Can I use cookies instead of graham crackers?

Yes. Chocolate chip cookies or shortbread work well. Keep the same time, and cut the chocolate if the cookie already has chips.
