Air Fryer Roasted Onions
A roasted onion turns sweet, soft and golden, but the oven takes close to an hour to get there. Air fryer roasted onions get the same caramelized edges in about 15 minutes, and the method works for wedges, onion and pepper strips, or whole onions. This recipe gives you times by size, a quick onions and peppers version and how to keep the thin edges from burning.

Why the air fryer works for onions
An onion is about 90 percent water, with natural sugars packed in the layers. When the circulating hot air removes surface moisture, those sugars brown in a process called caramelization, and the onion goes from sharp to sweet. A conventional oven does the same job but takes much longer, and a skillet needs constant stirring and attention.
The thin tips of each wedge cook faster than the thick base, which is why the edges turn dark and crisp while the center stays soft and jammy. That contrast is the reason to roast onions in the air fryer instead of sautéing them. The thicker the wedge, the more forgiving the recipe is.

Tips
- Leave the root end on. The root holds the wedge together, so the layers do not fall apart in the basket.
- Choose by flavor. Yellow onions give the most balanced sweetness, red onions are milder and turn a deep purple, and sweet onions cook faster and are very juicy.
- Shake, do not stir. Shake the basket every few minutes so the pieces move around and brown on all sides.
What to serve with roasted onions
Roasted onions are a side for hamburgers, steak and brats, where they replace sautéed or grilled onions. Pile them on a hot dog, stir them into mashed potatoes or put them on a sandwich with melted cheese. Cooked in bulk, they are also a good base for onion dip or French onion soup.
Storing and reheating
Roasted onions keep for 4 to 5 days in a sealed container in the refrigerator, and they freeze well for up to 3 months. Reheat them in the air fryer at 350 °F for 3–4 minutes, or add them straight from the freezer to a skillet or a soup.
Variations
- Onions and peppers: Swap one onion for 2 sliced bell peppers and add ½ tsp chili powder for a fajita-style mix.
- Balsamic: Toss the cooked onions with 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar and 1 tsp brown sugar for a sticky glaze.
- Whole roasted onions: Cut a cross in the top of 4 medium onions, brush with oil, and cook at 350 °F for 25–30 minutes, until a knife slides through.
- Cheesy: Sprinkle shredded Gruyère on top for the last 2 minutes (not dairy-free).
If it does not turn out right
- The outer layers burn but the center is raw
- The wedges are too thin or the temperature is too high. Cut thicker wedges and lower the temperature to 350 °F, and shake the basket often.
- The onions are pale and watery
- The basket was too full. Cook in a single layer and in two batches if needed, so steam can escape.
- The onions taste bitter
- Burnt edges taste bitter. Remove any blackened pieces and cook the rest for less time next time, checking after 10 minutes.
Questions and answers
How long do you roast onions in the air fryer?
Onion wedges take 12–15 minutes at 375 °F. Thin slices need 8–10 minutes, and whole peeled onions need 25–30 minutes at 350 °F.
Can you make onions and peppers in the air fryer?
Yes. Slice 1 onion and 2 bell peppers into strips of the same thickness, toss with oil and cook at 375 °F for 12–15 minutes, shaking twice. They work for fajitas and sausage sandwiches.
How do you make fried onions in the air fryer?
Slice onions very thin, toss them with a little oil and cook at 350 °F for 10–12 minutes, shaking every 3 minutes. They turn crispy as they cool, which works for green bean casserole.
Do you need to preheat the air fryer for onions?
A short 3-minute preheat helps the onions brown from the first minute, but they will also cook without it. Add 1–2 minutes if you skip it.
