Air Fryer Fish Tacos
Air fryer fish tacos give you the crunch of a fish shack taco without a pot of hot oil. Strips of cod coated in seasoned panko turn golden in about 10 minutes, and while they cook you can toss a cilantro lime slaw and warm the tortillas. You get eight crisp, flaky tacos that taste like the fried version with far less cleanup.

Why the air fryer works for fish tacos
Fish tacos are all about contrast, with a crunchy coating, tender flaky fish and a cool, sharp topping. Deep frying delivers the crunch but takes a lot of oil and effort. In the air fryer, fast-moving hot air dries the surface of the panko and browns it, while the inside of the fish steams gently in its own moisture. A light coat of cooking spray is enough to help the crumbs color.
Fish tacos in the air fryer also fit a weeknight schedule. The fish takes about 10 minutes, the slaw needs no cooking, and the tortillas warm in the last minute. Because the strips are small, they cook evenly, and you can tell they are done by a golden color and a flaky center that reaches 145 °F, the USDA recommended temperature for fish.

- Make the slaw sauce Whisk the mayonnaise, sour cream, the juice of 1 lime, and a pinch of salt in a large bowl. Add the cabbage and cilantro, toss, and set aside so the cabbage softens slightly while the fish cooks.
- Season and bread the fish Pat the cod strips completely dry with paper towels. Mix the panko with the chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, salt and pepper. Dredge each strip in flour, dip it in the egg, then press it firmly into the panko on all sides.
- Preheat Preheat the air fryer to 400 °F for . Brush the basket lightly with oil, then spray the breaded fish with oil from a mister until no dry patches of panko remain.
- Cook Arrange the strips in a single layer with a little space between them; most 5–6 qt baskets hold about ¾ lb of breaded strips at a time, so cook in two batches. Cook each batch for , flipping the strips after , until deep golden.
- Check Insert an instant-read thermometer into the thickest strip. The fish is done at 145 °F and flakes easily. Thicker pieces may need an extra minute or two.
- Warm the tortillas and assemble Wrap the tortillas in a damp paper towel and microwave them for 30 seconds, or warm them briefly over a gas flame. Fill each with a few pieces of fish, a spoonful of slaw and a slice of avocado, and finish with a squeeze of lime.

Tips
- Cut even strips. Aim for pieces about 1 inch wide and 3 inches long so they finish at the same time. Cut thick tail ends in half.
- Press the panko on. Use one hand for the dry coating and one for the wet to keep your fingers from clumping. Press until the crumbs stick all over.
- Do not skip the spray. Panko only browns where it has a little fat. A quick spray on each side takes the place of frying oil.
Choosing the fish
Cod and haddock give large, tender flakes and are the classic choice. Tilapia is thinner and cheaper, so it cooks faster and works well if you fold it over before breading. Halibut is firmer and a bit pricier, and holds up to thicker pieces. What to serve with fish tacos
Fish tacos are a full meal with slaw and avocado, but rice and beans or a bowl of chips and salsa round them out. For game day, set out extra limes, hot sauce and a platter of corn on the cob. Browse more fish and seafood recipes for ideas.
Storing and reheating
Store the cooked fish separately from the tortillas and slaw in a sealed container for up to 2 days in the refrigerator. Reheat the fish in the air fryer at 350 °F for 3–4 minutes until it reaches 165 °F in the center and the coating is crisp again. Do not microwave breaded fish, which turns it soft.
Variations
- Blackened: Skip the panko, rub the cod with 1 tbsp of chili powder, smoked paprika and a little cayenne, and cook at 380 °F for 8–10 minutes.
- Mango salsa: Top the tacos with diced mango, red onion, jalapeño, cilantro and lime juice instead of slaw.
- Baja style: Add a drizzle of chipotle mayo and some pickled red onions for a smoky, tangy finish.
If it does not turn out right
- The breading is pale or falls off
- The fish was damp or the panko was not pressed on. Dry the cod well, press the crumbs firmly and spray the coating with oil until it looks evenly moist.
- The fish is dry
- The strips were too thin or cooked too long. Cut them about 1 inch wide and take them out at 145 °F. Thin tilapia fillets need only 6–7 minutes.
- The tacos are soggy
- Dress the slaw lightly and add it right before serving. Put the hot fish on the tortilla first and the cold toppings on top.
Questions and answers
How long do fish tacos take in the air fryer?
Panko-breaded cod strips take 8–10 minutes at 400 °F, flipped halfway. Unbreaded seasoned fish takes about the same time at 380 °F, and thin tilapia needs 6–7 minutes.
Can I make air fryer fish tacos with no breading?
Yes. Pat the fish dry, brush it with oil, coat it with the spice mix and cook it at 380 °F for 8–10 minutes. It will be tender and flaky, not crunchy.
Can I cook frozen fish for tacos in the air fryer?
Frozen breaded fish fillets or sticks work well. Cook them straight from the freezer at 400 °F for 10–14 minutes, flip once, and check for 165 °F in the center. Unbreaded frozen cod is best thawed overnight first.
What is the best fish for fish tacos?
Cod is the usual choice because it is mild and holds together in strips. Tilapia, halibut and haddock also work. Avoid delicate fish that breaks apart when flipped.
