Chicken Legs in the Air Fryer
Chicken legs in the air fryer come out with crackling skin and tender, juicy meat in about 32 minutes at 400 °F. A whole leg, also sold as a leg quarter, is a drumstick and thigh still joined together, so it is a bigger, more filling piece than a drumstick alone. This recipe shows how to get the skin crisp and the meat cooked through at the bone.

Why the air fryer works for chicken legs
A leg quarter has a lot going on: a thick thigh, a lean drumstick, a bone through the middle and a large sheet of skin on top. In a conventional oven the skin often turns chewy by the time the meat near the bone is done. The air fryer solves this with fast-moving hot air that dries and renders the skin while the meat cooks gently underneath.
Dark meat also forgives a longer cook. Unlike chicken breast, which dries out above 165 °F, legs and thighs gain tenderness up to about 185 °F, so you do not need to rush them out. That makes chicken legs one of the easier cuts to get right.
How to make chicken legs in the air fryer
Tap a time to start a timer.
- Trim and dry Trim any loose flaps of skin and excess fat from the leg quarters, then pat them completely dry with paper towels. Dry skin is what makes the crunch.
- Season Stir the baking powder, salt, paprika, garlic powder, thyme and pepper together. Rub the oil over the legs, then press the seasoning onto all sides, including under the skin where you can.
- Preheat Preheat the air fryer to 400 °F for .
- Cook skin side down Place the legs in the basket skin side down, with space between them. Cook for . Starting skin side down lets the thick thigh meat cook without the skin burning.
- Flip and crisp Turn the legs skin side up with tongs and cook for another , until the skin is deep golden and crisp.
- Check and rest Insert an instant-read thermometer into the thickest part of the thigh without touching the bone. It must read at least 165 °F, and dark meat is best at 175–185 °F, so add a few minutes if needed. Rest the legs for before serving.
Times and temperatures

Tips
- Cook skin side down first. The skin renders into the basket and the thick thigh gets a head start, then the final side-up stage crisps the top.
- Score thick joints. A small cut along the bone helps heat reach the center and lets you see whether the juices run clear.
- Season generously. Chicken legs are meaty and the skin takes plenty of salt, so use the full teaspoon.
Which cut do you have?
Packages of chicken legs can contain whole leg quarters (thigh and drumstick joined) or only drumsticks, and sometimes people call both "chicken legs." If you are working with separate thighs, see chicken thighs in the air fryer for boneless and bone-in times. Whole leg quarters take the longest of the three, which is why this recipe uses 32 minutes.
What to serve with chicken legs
A big leg quarter is a full dinner on its own with a few easy sides. Try baked potatoes and green beans, or go for sweet potato fries and coleslaw. For Sunday dinner, carrots round out the plate.
Storing and reheating
Store cooled legs in a sealed container in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days. To reheat, place them in the air fryer at 350 °F for 8–10 minutes, until they reach 165 °F in the thickest part. The skin crisps again. You can also pull the meat off the bone for tacos, soup or chicken salad.
Variations
- Barbecue: Brush with 3 tbsp barbecue sauce during the last 3 minutes so the sugars do not scorch.
- Lemon herb: Swap the paprika for 1 tsp dried oregano and finish with a squeeze of lemon.
- Cajun: Replace the thyme and paprika with 2 tsp Cajun seasoning and cut the salt to ¾ tsp.
If it does not turn out right
- The skin is crisp but the meat near the bone is underdone
- Leg quarters are thick. Lower the temperature to 380 °F and add 5 minutes, and always check the thickest part of the thigh with a thermometer, away from the bone.
- The legs do not fit in one layer
- Most 4 qt baskets hold only 2 leg quarters. Cook larger batches in rounds, and keep the first batch warm on a rack in a 200 °F oven so the skin stays crisp.
- The skin is rubbery
- Moisture is the cause. Pat the legs very dry, add the baking powder, and make sure the basket is not crowded.
Questions and answers
How long do chicken legs take in the air fryer?
About 32 minutes at 400 °F for 12 oz leg quarters, 16 minutes per side. At 375 °F plan for 35–40 minutes, and at 350 °F for 40–45 minutes.
What temperature should chicken legs be cooked to?
The USDA minimum is 165 °F, measured in the thickest part of the thigh. Dark meat is more tender at 175–185 °F because the connective tissue has time to soften.
Can I cook chicken legs from frozen?
Yes, at 370 °F for about 45 minutes, flipping every 15 minutes. Season after the first 15 minutes when the surface has thawed, and check that the thickest part reaches 165 °F.
Are chicken legs the same as drumsticks?
Not quite. A drumstick is the lower part of the leg. A chicken leg or leg quarter includes the thigh as well, so it is larger and needs longer cooking.
Can I cook chicken legs and thighs together?
Yes, if they are similar in weight. Bone-in thighs cook in about 22–25 minutes at 400 °F, so add them 8 minutes after the leg quarters.
