Spam in the Air Fryer

Spam is already cooked, so the only job of the air fryer is to turn the soft, salty slab into something crisp and browned at the edges. Air fryer Spam takes 8 to 12 minutes at 400 °F, needs almost no oil, and works as slices for breakfast, cubes for fried rice or sticks for dipping. Here are the times for each cut and a quick soy-brown sugar glaze.

Why the air fryer works for Spam

Canned luncheon meat is mostly pork shoulder, salt and starch, pressed into a block and fully cooked in the can. That means there is nothing to cook through, only a surface to crisp. Pan frying works but needs added fat and constant turning. In the air fryer, the hot air dries the outside, and the fat already in the meat renders into the basket and fries the edges for you.

Shape controls the result. Thin slices turn almost crunchy, like thick bacon. Sticks give a crisp shell with a soft center, which is why Spam fries are popular with dips. Cubes work for fried rice, since they stay firm when tossed in a hot pan.

How to make Spam in the air fryer

Tap a time to start a timer.

  1. Slice the Spam Open the can, run a knife around the edge and slide the block out. Cut it into ¼-inch slices for crisp edges, ½-inch sticks for fries, or ¾-inch cubes. Thinner pieces get crispier, and thicker pieces stay softer inside.
  2. Oil lightly Pat the pieces dry with a paper towel and toss with the oil. Spam is already fatty, so only a thin film is needed to help browning.
  3. Preheat Preheat the air fryer to 400 °F for .
  4. Cook Place the slices in the basket in a single layer without overlapping. Cook for , flipping after . Sticks need 10 to and cubes need 8 to , shaking the basket halfway. The pieces are ready when the edges are dark golden and crisp and the inside is hot, at 165 °F.
  5. Glaze (optional) Stir the brown sugar and soy sauce together, brush it over the slices and cook for 1 more minute. The sugar burns fast at 400 °F, so keep the final minute short.

Tips

  • Cut evenly. Pieces of the same thickness brown at the same speed. Use a sharp knife and a ruler-straight cut.
  • Do not crowd the basket. Overlapping slices steam each other and stay pale. Cook in two batches if needed.
  • Watch the last two minutes. The meat goes from golden to dark quickly because of the sugars and fat on the surface.

What to serve with Spam

For a Hawaiian-style plate, serve crisp Spam slices with steamed white rice and a fried egg. For breakfast, tuck the slices into a toasted English muffin with a scrambled eggs filling, or put cubes into a skillet of fried potatoes. Spam fries go well with sriracha mayo or ketchup. Add green beans or broccoli for the vegetables.

Storing and reheating

Cooked Spam keeps for 3 to 4 days in a sealed container in the refrigerator. Reheat slices in the air fryer at 350 °F for 3 to 4 minutes until hot and crisp at the edges again, which takes the leftover pieces back to 165 °F. An unopened can stays good in the pantry, and an opened one needs to be wrapped and refrigerated within a few hours.

Variations

  • Spam musubi: Glaze the slices as above, then place each one on a block of pressed rice and wrap with a strip of nori.
  • Spam and eggs: Cook the slices first, then top with eggs fried in a skillet or baked in a small ramekin.
  • Spam fritters: Dip slices in a thick pancake-style batter only if you plan to fry in a pan, because wet batter does not work in the air fryer. For the basket, bread the slices with flour, egg and panko, then cook at 400 °F for 8 minutes.

If it does not turn out right

The Spam is soft, not crisp
The slices were too thick or the basket was crowded. Cut ¼ inch thick, leave space between pieces and add 2 minutes for a deeper crust.
The glaze burns
Brush the sugar glaze on only in the last minute, and lower the temperature to 350 °F if the pieces are already dark.
It tastes too salty
Spam is seasoned heavily. Serve it with plain rice, eggs or potatoes, and skip extra salt or soy sauce on the rest of the plate.

Questions and answers

How long does Spam take in the air fryer?

Slices take 8 minutes at 400 °F, flipped halfway. Cubes need 8 to 10 minutes and ½-inch fries 10 to 12 minutes. Thicker pieces take a few minutes more.

Do I need to oil Spam before air frying?

Not much. A teaspoon or two of oil, or a light mist of cooking spray, helps browning, but the meat contains enough fat to crisp on its own.

Can you air fry Spam from frozen?

Yes, but slice first if you can. Frozen slices need about 10 to 12 minutes at 380 °F, flipped halfway. A whole frozen block is hard to cut, so thaw it in the refrigerator.

Do I need to cook Spam at all?

It is fully cooked and can be eaten cold from the can. Heating it to 165 °F improves flavor and texture.
