Air Fryer Ranch Chicken

Air fryer ranch chicken turns thin breast cutlets into a herby, tangy dinner in about 9 minutes, with no breading at all. A dry ranch rub gives the flavor, and a spoonful of ranch dressing keeps the lean meat moist and helps the herbs brown. It is a good weeknight recipe, and the same method works for thighs, tenders and wings.

Why the air fryer works for ranch chicken

Ranch flavor comes from dried herbs, garlic, onion and a tangy dairy base. In a skillet, the dressing tends to slide around and burn on the pan. In the air fryer, the hot air moves over the surface of the chicken and sets a thin layer of dressing and herbs into a savory crust, so the flavor sits on the meat rather than in the pan.

Slicing the breast into thin cutlets is the other half of the method. A thin piece cooks in about 9 minutes, and almost the whole surface gets the browned, seasoned crust. Thicker breasts are possible, but they need a lower temperature and a longer time. If you prefer a breaded version, see chicken tenders in the air fryer.

How to make ranch chicken in the air fryer

Tap a time to start a timer.

  1. Cut the cutlets Lay each breast flat and slice it in half horizontally with a sharp knife to make 4 thin cutlets of about ½ inch. Pat them completely dry with paper towels.
  2. Mix the rub Stir together the parsley, dill, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper and chives. Coat the chicken with the ranch dressing and oil, then press the herb rub on both sides.
  3. Preheat Preheat the air fryer to 400 °F for .
  4. Cook Place 2 cutlets in the basket without overlapping and cook for , flipping after . Cook the second batch the same way and keep the first one warm under foil.
  5. Check and rest Insert an instant-read thermometer into the thickest part. When it reads 165 °F, rest the chicken for before slicing or serving.

Tips

  • Slice, do not pound. Cutting the breast horizontally gives two even layers without tearing the meat.
  • Rest the chicken. Five minutes under foil lets the juices settle and the ranch seasoning set.
  • Add a dip. Serve with a small bowl of extra ranch dressing, which is also good with a squeeze of lemon.

What to serve with ranch chicken

Ranch chicken is a natural match with classic American sides such as corn on the cob, coleslaw or a baked potato. Potato wedges in the air fryer cook at the same temperature, and a plate of raw celery, carrots and cherry tomatoes works as a lighter option. Sliced into strips, the chicken is good on a salad with a little crumbled bacon.

Storing and reheating

Refrigerate leftovers in a sealed container for 3 to 4 days. Reheat cutlets in the air fryer at 350 °F for 3–4 minutes, until they reach 165 °F in the center. The short time keeps thin meat from drying out. Chopped cold, the chicken is a good base for wraps.

Variations

  • Ranch parmesan: Sprinkle 2 tbsp of grated parmesan over the cutlets before cooking for a salty, cheesy crust.
  • Ranch chicken and potatoes: Toss 1 lb of baby potatoes, halved, in oil and ranch rub, and cook them at 400 °F for 8 minutes before adding the chicken.
  • Bacon ranch: Top each cooked cutlet with crumbled bacon and shredded cheddar, then return it to the basket for 1 minute to melt.

If it does not turn out right

The herbs burn
Dried herbs scorch on a very dry surface. Make sure the cutlets have the oil and dressing coating, and drop the temperature to 380 °F if the herbs darken before the chicken is done.
The chicken is dry
Thin cutlets cook fast. Start checking at 7 minutes, and take the chicken out at 165 °F rather than cooking to a time.
The coating slides off
Pat the chicken dry first, and press the rub on firmly. A wet surface washes the herbs away.

Questions and answers

How long does ranch chicken take in the air fryer?

Cutlets of ½ inch take about 9 minutes at 400 °F. Whole breasts of 1 inch take 14–16 minutes at 380 °F, boneless thighs 14–16 minutes at 380 °F and wings 22–25 minutes at 400 °F.

Can I use a ranch seasoning packet?

Yes. Use about 2 tbsp of dry ranch mix in place of the herbs and garlic, and reduce the salt, because most packets are already salty.

Can I make ranch chicken tenders without breading?

Yes. Use chicken tenderloins, coat them as above and cook at 400 °F for 8–10 minutes, flipping halfway, until 165 °F inside.

Is ranch chicken gluten-free?

The recipe itself is, but check the label on your ranch dressing and any seasoning mix, because some contain wheat-based thickeners.
