Ground Beef in the Air Fryer

Air fryer ground beef browns without a skillet and without standing over the stove. The loose crumbles sit in the basket while the fat drips through, so you get dry, well-browned meat for tacos, pasta sauce and casseroles in about 12 minutes. This guide explains how to break it up, what temperature to use and when ground beef is safe.

Why the air fryer works for ground beef

When you brown ground beef in a skillet, it sits in its own fat and steams before it browns. In the air fryer basket, the fat falls away from the meat as it renders, and hot air moves through the pieces. The result is drier, more deeply browned beef with a better texture for tacos and sauces, and less to drain afterward.

The trade-off is that the fat lands in the drawer below, where it can smoke if the drawer is crowded or the beef is very fatty. For that reason 85% lean works best, and a thin, loose layer works better than a thick pile. For burgers made from the same meat, see hamburgers in the air fryer, and for shaped meatballs, see meatballs in the air fryer.

How to cook ground beef in the air fryer

Tap a time to start a timer.

  1. Prep the meat Break the ground beef into 1-inch chunks in a bowl. Do not press or knead it. Sprinkle with the salt, pepper, garlic powder and chili powder and mix gently.
  2. Preheat Preheat the air fryer to 375 °F for .
  3. Spread in the basket Spread the chunks loosely in the basket in a layer no more than 1 inch deep. A 4 qt basket holds 1 lb, though a thinner layer browns better.
  4. Cook and break up Cook for . After , stir and break the pieces apart with a spatula. Stir again at . The fat collects under the basket, so pour it off carefully.
  5. Check The beef is done when no pink remains and an instant-read thermometer reads 160 °F. Pour the crumbles onto a paper towel-lined plate for a few seconds to drain, then use them right away.

Tips

  • Start with chunks. Tear the beef apart by hand instead of dropping in one block. Small chunks brown on more sides.
  • Season early. Salt and spices go on before cooking so they flavor the meat all the way through.
  • Keep it loose. Crumbles that touch steam each other. If your basket is small, cook in two batches.

What to serve with ground beef

Use the crumbles in taco shells, burrito bowls, nachos, sloppy joes or a baked pasta. Mix them with cooked rice and beans for a fast weeknight dinner, or stir them into marinara for spaghetti. They also work for stuffed peppers; see stuffed peppers in the air fryer if you want to use the beef that way.

Storing and reheating

Cooked ground beef keeps for 3 to 4 days in the refrigerator and 3 months in the freezer. For meal prep, cool the crumbles quickly and portion them into freezer bags. Reheat in the air fryer at 350 °F for 3 to 4 minutes, stirring once, until the meat reaches 165 °F in the center.

Variations

  • Taco meat: Swap the spices for 1 tbsp taco seasoning and stir in 3 tbsp water for the last 2 minutes.
  • Italian: Use 1 tsp Italian seasoning and ½ tsp fennel seeds instead of chili powder.
  • Smoky: Add 1 tsp smoked paprika and ½ tsp onion powder.

If it does not turn out right

The beef clumps into one big piece
Break it into small chunks before it goes into the basket, and stir with a spatula at 4 and 8 minutes. Leaner beef clumps more than 80% lean beef does.
The meat is dry and gray
It was too lean or cooked too long. Use 80% or 85% lean ground beef and stop at 160 °F.
Smoke rises from the air fryer
Fat is burning in the drawer. Empty the drawer after 6 minutes, and add 1 tbsp water to the bottom when cooking 80% lean beef.

Questions and answers

How long does ground beef take in the air fryer?

About 12 minutes at 375 °F for 1 lb of crumbles. At 350 °F plan on 14 minutes, and at 400 °F about 9 to 10 minutes while stirring often.

What temperature should ground beef reach?

The USDA recommends 160 °F for all ground beef. Color is not a reliable sign, so use a thermometer.

Can I cook frozen ground beef in the air fryer?

Yes, but thaw it if you can. A frozen 1 lb block can be cooked at 350 °F for 10 minutes, then scraped apart and cooked for 8 to 10 more minutes, stirring, until it reaches 160 °F.

Can I use it for tacos?

Yes. Cook the plain crumbles as above, then stir in taco seasoning and a few tablespoons of water and cook for 2 more minutes.
